6th International Workshop on Streptococcus suis (IWSs)

In 2013, with the goal of uniting the growing S. suis research community, Profs. Segura and Gottschalk organized the inaugural International Workshop on Streptococcus suis (IWSs). This initiative was part of a Canada-China Joint Health Research Initiative funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The workshop was co-organized with Prof. Xu from the State Key Laboratory for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, Beijing, China). For the first time, more than 80 researchers and students working on S. suis gathered in one place.

Building on the success of the first workshop, Profs. Segura and Gottschalk subsequently organized the 2nd and 4th IWSs in Argentina (2014) and Canada (2019), respectively. The 3rd IWSs, held in Germany in 2016, was led by Prof. Peter Valentin-Weigand (Hannover University). The 5th IWSs took place in Thailand, jointly organized by Canada in collaboration with Prof. Srimanote (Thammasat University).

To further promote and strengthen international collaboration on S. suis research, we are now organizing the 6th IWSs under a Canada-UK partnership. This workshop will be hosted at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, UK, where we expect researchers from around the globe to convene and share the latest advances on this important swine and zoonotic pathogen.

The CRIPA

The CRIPA aims to create a dynamic environment for interaction among 122 teams led by scientists engaged in basic or applied research at universities, government institutions, and private corporations in the province of Quebec, other Canadian provinces as well as international institutions.  It also strives to foster communication between these researchers and potential users of their findings, primarily veterinarians and swine and poultry producers. To support this goal, the center publishes monthly scientific popularization articles on its blog, Dash of Science. Learn more on our website or visit our blog.
